Keeping Traffic Noise in Bay in Hong Kong – Feasible or Impossible?

In 2000, there were about 1.1 million residents exposed daily to high levels of road traffic noise in Hong Kong. This was attributable to a combination of factors including scarcity of habitable land, a sharp increase of population and huge demand of transportation to support economic growth. To keep the noise problem at bay, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is taking proactive actions following a 4-pronged approach in a holistic manner. If Hong Kong is successful in keeping traffic noise at bay, no doubt this would be seen as exemplars.

Noise Policies in Thailand – Case Studies

Thailand, a tropical country with a population of more than 66 million people, is surrounded by various types of sounds. Noise produced by motorcycles and Tuk-tuks, music played during festivals, you name it. If the noises are not properly handled, it would seriously affect citizens’ health, both mentally and physically. This lecture summarizes the progress towards noise mitigation in Thailand from 2005 to 2020, as well as some of the difficulties the country is facing in regards to handling noise complaints, and promoting acoustics with interesting case studies.

Noise Assessment Practices

This lecture explains and summarizes some of the common noise assessment steps and methods for road traffic, railway and industrial noise. It also compares the situation between less compacted cities and compacted cities, as well as analyzes the advantages and limitations of the solutions on mitigating those noise. It also shares some first-hand experiences on noise assessment practices, and how it can be better achieved.
