The Royster Student Scholarship Award 2020+

The Royster Student Scholarship Award—generously contributed by Larry and Julia Royster—is a chapter-run poster competition held once a year for a total of US$5,000 in scholarships. Full-time graduate students enrolled in a program involving acoustics, or senior undergraduate students expecting to enrol in such a program, are eligible to submit entries.

About the competition

The 2020 event was run by the East and South East Asia (ESEA) Chapter. We had the honour of inviting Prof Dr Brigitte Schulte-Fortkamp (Vice-President of European Acoustics Association), Prof Dr Jian Kang (Professor of Acoustics at University College London), and Mr Maurice Yeung (Vice-Chair of ASA ESEA) to be the judges.

Teams

Universities

A total of 12 teams from 10 universities across China, Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Japan have submitted posters on hearing conservation and noise control topics under the theme “Sound and Wellbeing”. A rich variety of approaches were presented in the respective proposals. Based on scientific merit, the apparent future potential of the students to contribute to the general field of acoustics, and the relevance of the presentation to the scope of the competition, two entries were selected and each team has received a scholarship of US$2,500, to be applied towards full-time graduate study in acoustics.

Judging Panel

Prof Dr Brigitte Schulte-Fortkamp
Vice-President of European Acoustics Association

Brigitte Schulte-Fortkamp is a Professor (retired) of Psychoacoustics and Noise Effects, Technische Universität Berlin, Germany. Her research and teaching activities include Psychoacoustics, Acoustic Ecology, and Soundscapes. Dr Schulte-Fortkamp was visiting as a research professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston, Osaka University, and Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris. Among others, she was co-chair of the European Committee COST Action TD 082011-201204 “Soundscape of European Cities and Landscapes”. She is not only a member of ISO/TC 43/SC 1/WG 54 -12913-1 “Perceptual assessment of soundscape quality” but also a project leader for ISO/TS 12913-2 Soundscape 2018: Data collection and reporting requirements. She is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and served for 12 years as Associate Editor in Noise for JASA. Dr Schulte-Fortkamp’s current activities for ASA include chairing the Committee on International Liaison and being active as a member of several ASA committees. In 2011-2012 she was ASA Vice President. Currently, she is Vice-President of the European Acoustics Association (EAA) and since 2013 a member of the board of the German Acoustical Society (DEGA). Dr Schulte-Fortkamp is a Distinguished International Member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering (INCE USA). In 2010, she was awarded the Hear the World Foundation Award and in 2012 she was the recipient of the European Soundscape Award.

Prof Jian Kang
Professor of Acoustics at University College London, United Kingdom

Professor Jian Kang holds Chair in Acoustics at the Bartlett Faculty of Built Environment, University College London, UK. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the UK Institute of Acoustics, a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, and a Fellow of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration. He chairs the European Acoustics Association Technical Committee for Noise and the EU COST Action on Soundscape of European Cities and Landscapes, and he is President-Elected of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration. He has worked in environmental and architectural acoustics for 30+ years, with 80+ research projects, 800+ publications, and 90+ engineering/consultancy projects. He is a recipient of the Advanced ERC Grant Award, currently working internationally on developing Soundscape Indices.

Maurice Yeung
Vice-Chair of ASA ESEA

Maurice is the charter member of the East and South-East Asia Regional Chapter of Acoustical Society of America and is currently the Vice-Chair. He is also a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Acoustics and Macau Institute of Acoustics; and a Member of the Acoustical Society of China. Maurice is an Engineer by profession. He is an active member in the engineering field as well as in the acoustician circle both overseas and in Hong Kong. He has over 30 years of experience in environmental noise planning and assessment; and the development of noise-related policies in Hong Kong. He retired from the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of the Hong Kong SAR Government in 2017 and he is now still supporting EPD specifically on a number of projects deploying “acoustics windows” as noise mitigation designs to tackle environmental noise.
